The best man is traditionally chosen by the groom. He may be a brother, close relative or friend of the groom. Some grooms choose their father to act as their best man or even their son in some circumstances. The best man duties are extremely important. The main responsibilities of the best man include ensuring the groom arrives at the church or ceremony site on time, holding the rings during the ceremony and giving the first toast to the couple during the reception. Other best many duties may depend upon the wishes of the groom.
Traditional Duties
Traditionally, the best man is also responsible for planning a bachelor party for the groom, although it is a good idea to discuss bachelor party ideas with the groom in advance. The best man should also make arrangements for the ushers and/or groomsmen to be fitted for their tuxedos. While the tuxedos are often chosen by the groom, or the bride, it is the responsibility of the best man to pay for his attire.
Other Duties
Other duties of the best man include assisting the groom getting dressed, providing moral support to the groom prior to the ceremony and helping to confirm any arrangements
for the honeymoon. The best man may also drive the groom to the ceremony or simply ride with the groom, depending upon travel arrangements. In addition, the best man will hold onto the wedding rings and marriage certificate and will usually sign the marriage certificate as a witness. Following the ceremony, the best man may handle paying the officiant and other vendors; although he is not directly responsible for these costs.
The best man should plan to attend the engagement party, any 'couple' showers that are held, the rehearsal and the rehearsal dinner prior to the wedding. If there are to be any post-wedding events, such as a brunch on the following day, the best many should attend those events as well. Best man duties also include overseeing the couple's timetable and ensuring that everything runs on time and that the couple departs for their honeymoon on time. He may also drive the couple to their hotel or departure point for their honeymoon. After the wedding, the best man may be responsible for ensuring the groom's tux is sent to the cleaners or returned to the rental shop while also coordinating the return of the usher's and groomsmen's attire.
