Bridesmaid Duties and Responsibilities

Bridesmaid Duties image Being chosen as a bridesmaid in a friend's wedding ceremony is certainly an honor but it is also an important responsibility and it is a good idea to understand what is expected of you and the proper etiquette associated with this role.

The actual bridesmaid duties and responsibilities may vary from bride to bride depending on her preferences. In some cases, the bridesmaid may help with everything from addressing invitations to helping to keep everything running smooth at the reception. In other cases, the bride may simply need her bridesmaid for emotional support.

Before the Wedding
Prior to the wedding, the bridesmaid will be responsible for ensuring she is fitted for her bridesmaid dress or sending her measurement well in advance so that the correct size can be ordered. The bride typically chooses the dresses for her attendants, although each bridesmaid is usually responsible for paying for her own dress.

Bridesmaid duties will also commonly include hosting a bridal shower for the bride-to-be in conjunction with the maid of honor. During the actual shower, the bridesmaids will assist by keeping track of the gifts received by the bride so that she can write thank you notes later. Bridesmaids may also help in planning a bachelorette party. In addition, bridesmaids should plan to attend both the wedding rehearsal and rehearsal dinner and make sure they are familiar with other members of the wedding party as well as the families of the bride and groom. Depending on the nature of the rehearsal dinner, the bridesmaid may also give a toast.

Bridesmaid Duties On the Day of the Wedding
On the day of the actual of the wedding, the bridesmaid will assist the bride in getting ready for the ceremony. Bridesmaid duties include ensuring the bride is relaxed and has everything she needs to cover possible necessities. The bridesmaid will also need to make sure she is in the correct location for the beginning of the ceremony as part of the processional. Following the ceremony, the bridesmaid should stay nearby to receive instructions regarding photographs.

Bridesmaid Duties At the Wedding Reception
Bridesmaids are commonly seated with other members of the wedding party at the reception. It is the responsibility of the bridesmaid to ensure the party flows smoothly and introduce themselves to others. At the same time, she should check in with the bride occasionally to see if she needs anything. Following the reception, the bridesmaid should make sure the bride has everything she needs prior to departing and may assist in decorating the couple's car prior to their departure. If a brunch or other event is to be held the day after the wedding, the bridesmaid will need to attend and help to ensure that everything flows smoothly as well prior to the couple departing for their honeymoon.
